Movie: Joe vs The Volcano
Are we all created equal? No, obviously not. We all have our special talents and abilities. We all strive to develop those talents to the best of our ability, but we are certainly not all equal. That would ruin the whole fun of being a human. Instead of the great variety of life we have we would all be robots living in a mundane routine world.
Does this mean that we can do nothing but what our talents lie in? Absolutely not! We must celebrate our talents and we must know where to focus our learning and development. Knowing your talent gives you focus on what to work on. Knowing your talent gives you the ability to focus on your weaknesses. Knowing your talent makes you a well rounded person.
With all that said I believe that we all have a great gift that is often well underutilized. That is our brain. It is easy to see changes in our bodies and physical attributes when we begin to work out or lift weights. Those are physical changes in not only what we can do from an athletic standpoint of lifting, jumping, and running, but we can also see physical changes. We see our arms and legs getting more defined and muscular. We see our shoulders getting broader. We also feel the difference. First we notice the difference with sore muscles, then we notice the difference with feeling a lot better than we did, we have more energy, and a lot of times a better outlook on life.
Those changes are not shown when we work on our brain. We do not see the physical changes. We do not have the bulging muscles to admire in the mirror. When we turn on the TV we do not see ourselves getting closer to the look of the actors and athletes that we watch so often. Because of this our brain often gets neglected in our development.
We must train the brain. We must train our brain like an Olympic athlete trains their body. Our brain is the equalizer in all things. We have this great underutilized thing on our shoulders and if we don’t use it…it will go to waste. We still have our own talents, we still have our special abilities within our brain but too many of those talents go underutilized.
So how do we train this all powerful thing? It is easy. Read! Meditate! Go to lectures and seminars! Turn off the TV. Yes even turn off the Internet. For the most part these are brain wasters. They give a brain that is active something to do. Think of it like a child. A child loves activity. You can give a child a set of Lego’s to help them create, or you can sit them in front of a TV to watch someone else create. Both pacify that part of the brain. I hope that it is obvious which is better for the child (actual physical play with the Lego’s is the best brain workout if you did not know).
With all this the major point not to miss is that our brain is the great equalizer. Develop it and train it like an athlete trains their body. For some it will come easier than others, it all depends on your talents, but we can all do a lot with our brains. So read, think, practice using your brain, do brain teasers, turn off the TV, turn off the Internet, get outside and learn from your surroundings, have fun with it and watch your development. Challenge yourself to new things. You never know what you may accomplish.
